Glasscraft, Inc. 2008 Workshop Schedule New Studio will open in 2008! As most of you know, we moved to our new location at 411 Violet Street last autumn. We are in the process of outfitting the new teaching studio at this time. We expect it to be completed by April of 2008. As a result, our Workshop schedule for 2008 will run from April through October. We are still in the process of scheduling more workshops. Please check back at this site often for an updated list of offerings. Cancellation Policy for 2008 Workshops:We regret that continued cancellations, non-payments and no-shows have made the following policy change necessary. Please check your calendar and make very certain you will be available on the workshop dates before signing up. In order to reserve your space in any workshop, the entire fee must be PAID IN FULL, IN ADVANCE, NON-REFUNDABLE, NO EXCEPTIONS. Ron Murphy Sat & Sun, April 12 & 13, 2008 Introduction to Goblets $375.00 Skill Level - Intermediate This course will cover the basics of forming all the components of goblets and wine glasses from Pyrex tubing. Techniques included are point pulling, vessel forming, solid and blown feet and designing creative stems. We will be adding color to each of the above while exploring various artistic methods. Bench rollers may be used in construction of the pieces. One year of prior expeirence with borosilicat tubing is helpful but not required. Sabina Boehm Sat & Sun, May 10 & 11, 2008 Flowers, Butterflies and Air Traps $425.00 Skill Level - Some Flameworking Experience Required This class will focus on a fundamental understanding of core heat, fuming of metals and color use in the context of marble and pendant making. Students will explore the compression technique (used for making flowers and butterflies) and the embedding/ implosion technique (used for making honeycombs and air traps). We will also cover decorating the backs of pendants and marbles using surface designs like pinwheels and fish scales. Intermediate to advanced flameworkers will make the most progress in this class but it is open to anyone comfortable with solid rod flameworking. Students will be encouraged to work at their own levels.
Roxanne Taylor Sat & Sun, July 19 & 20, 2008 Metal Magic $275.00 Skill Level –Late Beginner to Advanced This class will focus on metal decoration techniques for soft glass beads, including encased and surface application of silver, gold, palladium and copper. Application methods will including fuming, leaf, foil, mesh and wire. The use of goldstone, reduction frit, enamels and mica powders will also be covered as time permits. Students should be able to make basic barrel and olive-shaped beads with relative ease, so that attention and time can be focused on the surface decoration techniques rather than on shaping the glass. Loren Stump Tue thru Sat, September 9 thru 13, 2008 Loren I $1,175.00 Skill Level - Intermediate to Advanced This intermediate-level course will be divided into three parts: Murrini, Sculptural Techniques and Encasement. Murrini will include the basic techniques used to build, pull down and combine murrini canes, with a focus on producing letters and a signature cane. Sculptural Techniques will include cold assembly, hot sculpture, detail overlay, temperature control, tool use, drilling holes with hot tungsten pick, and the correct application of murrini, with a focus on making a variety of flowers, leaves and seed pods. During the Encasement portion students will use a Stump Sucker to create a floral paperweight by vacuum encasing the components created in the other two portions of the class in Schott crystal. Students should have at least two years of flameworking experience before taking this workshop. Brian Serck Sat & Sun, October 18 & 19, 2008 New and Innovative Ideas with Tubing $375.00 Skill Level - Intermediate This class will focus on the cutting edge of the newest techniques in borosilicate glass. For example, we will explore an innovative technique to evenly clear coat a vessel resulting in an encasement similar to furnace blown work, and we will create reduction mille cane. These techniques have many applications yet to be discovered or applied. The skills learned will be used during the workshop to create a final piece. The class will also cover use of color coiling, reverse balling and implants. If time permits we will delve into the use of Glow Glass powders as shown in the summer 1007 issue of Flow Magazine. Students must have some prior experience working borosilicate tubing, either from pulled points or with a blowhose. Jennifer Geldard Sat & Sun, October 25 & 26, 2008 Beyond the Round Bead $425.00 Skill Level – Intermediate to Advanced This course is designed to help current soft glass beadmakers to move their work to the next level. Topics will include: Finding Your Voice and other mistakes of beadmaking, Pushing the Boundaries in shape and surface design, Exploring Surface Techniques with metals and enamels, and Disaster Recovery as a means of self expression. Students should have at least two years of prior flameworking experience.
